It has not changed in all these years.
I lost a wild jackrabbit this morning. So sad. And so scary! I keep my hay, (until the barn is finished), in my horse trailer and while I am getting hay out inevitably, I drop some at the trailer door. Which in turn attracts all the wild rabbits, both jack and cottontail. I call it my "Bunny Buffet".
I love these little guys. They are funny and quick and have gotten surprisingly used to me moving around and do not run from me as they did at first.
This morning as I rounded the corner of the road to the pens, I saw a bunch of gray and one of my big Jacks struggling. Without thinking, I ran, as fast as I could, but alas. It was too late. And then, as I knelt to comfort as my Jack lay passing away, I realized........
THAT WAS THE BIGGEST BOBCAT I HAVE EVER SEEN!
That cat was as tall as Rhett dog, although not as long and much more buff!
What the heck was I thinking? That cat was huge so I went back and measured the tracks. Not quite, but almost the length of my fingers and as wide as my 3middle fingers.
I understand that I have moved into their territory. I understand that this is the way of nature. I understand that without predators, we would be over-run by rabbits.
I also understand that my Kitty Boys will forever be resigned to having to be in a kennel when they want to be outside. NO WAY will my kitties be bobcat or coyote food.
(not my bobcat, but one from the internet!)
